We know why you do this...

Letters to the Editor
January/February 2004 (Published)

Editor's note: It can be a bit frustrating when I'm trying to spark dialogue on our theme, and most of the letters to the editor are about Yaconelli instead. We've got a lot of articles in here, and it's been normal for well over half of the letters to reference one page of the journal that has nothing to do with the rest of the issue! Whether you agreed or disagreed with him, Mike Yaconelli's rants never failed to get a reaction. Here are excerpts from some of your reactions to the "Dangerous Wonder" column from the back page of Youthworker.

"First, let me say how much I enjoy your journal. But…"

"Can it really be that bad?"

"I absolutely love Mike Yaconelli"

"Sometimes Mike's just full of s**t"

"So often he puts words to my thoughts"

"…a stream of incongruent thoughts"

"You continue to tell the truth"

"That was what I have been trying to say for the past twenty years of youth ministry"

"Why toss the baby out with the bath water over a philosophical bent?"

"'Thanks' to Mike for so creatively and thoughtfully throwing rocks into the still pond of so many status quo youth ministries"

"Now I am completely depressed"

"I heard you loud and clear"

"Thank you for thinking outside of the box"

"Mike has always pushed the envelope"

"Your writings have brought hope to me"

"I get it and I agree"

"Ok, Mike, so which is it?"

"I got what you meant"

"I truly must disagree"

"Keep writing what's true"

"Not only did I get it, I was sad that so many didn't get it"

"It's exactly what we need to hear"

"I have just finished reading [it] for the fifth time and for the fifth time I am angry"

"His editorial lacks nuance"

"I am SHOCKED!"

"[They're] always well-written and practical"

"…off-balance and unfortunate"

"Thank you for honesty"

"I got the right message the first time I read it"

"Well it's always nice to get a good kick in the groin from Mr. Yaconelli"

"It hit the nail right on the head"

"I can't agree with your sentiments more"

"You spoke to my heart"

"I appreciate your apology to those that misunderstood you. But as for me...APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED!"

"Don't be so quick to apologize"

"I agree wholeheartedly!"

"I have written that article a thousand times in my head"

"I was a little taken aback"

"Way to go Mike!"

"It ticked me off"

"I agree with almost all of it "

"But I really enjoyed Mike Yaconelli's article"

"I am a bit confused, at least challenged"

"He's fresh, honest, sincere, and doesn't go with the status quo, kinda what Jesus was all about!"

"I have had great respect for Mike Yaconelli, but…"

"Thank you for the thought food, Mr. Yaconelli"

"I must express a concern I have"

"I made my legal 20 copies of your last article"

"I could easily relate and agree"

"The article was appalling"

"I WANT TO SAY—HOW TRUE!"

"Enough already"

"He is so right!"

"…honest, cynical, doing his own thing, and hysterically funny"

"So altogether relevant"

"I'm not trying to be a jerk, but…"

"Why the rant?"

"Mike Yaconelli's article is great"

"Did Mike Yaconelli get cut from his high school basketball team or something?"

"Mike's rants are right on target"

"Your outlook on Christianity is disturbing to me"

"Keep asking the hard questions"

"I think you are beyond ready for the upcoming Sabbath!"

"Thank you for using your voice to rant"

"Thank you for pissing people off."

"[It] seemed kind of one sided"

"I agree with almost everything he said"

"Thanks for the challenge"

"Who does he think he is?"

"Thanks to Mike Yaconelli for being a voice of reason"

"I'll add my rant to the mix"

"Now I am done with my rant!"

"Thanks again for your ministry over the years and the example that you've been and continue to be!"

Yes, Mike. Thanks. And we'll miss you.
