Lead by Influence
By Jon Huckins Posted on February 22 2011
It was my first day working in the local public high school. The teenagers walk into my classroom, 70% listening to their iPods while the other 30% are busy texting. They turn the chairs from their desks and face them towards their friends so they can carry on the conversation they were having on the bus. Trying not to show my inner panic, I calmly walk around the room and keep a stern face while thinking, “I’m sure they will all focus once the final bell rings for class to start.” One minute later the bell rings. It might as well have been their mom asking them to take out the trash…no response. I think, “What have I gotten myself into?”
I had worked at churches and been in youth ministry my whole adult life. I owned the title of “youth pastor” and was pretty good at it. Most little boys want to be baseball players or astronauts when they are little. I wanted to be a youth pastor. Weird? Maybe, but there was some truth to that dream and aspiration. I loved teenagers and being a youth pastor was a great context to serve them.

Ahh… What have we done by handing out titles and job descriptions?
When will we get it that we don’t need all that to be full time followers of Jesus?
Thanks for featuring Jon today. Love his writing and the life experience and integrity behind it.

It’s actually kind of funny that you would find authority in the position of youth pastor. It may be because I’ve very very very very new at the full-time youth ministry thing but I always feel like I’m riding by the seat of my pants! There are definitely adults here who DON’T have the respect of the teens in this church…I think the “youth pastor” bit gets your foot in the door…but if you’re not genuine about your love for Jesus and love for teens then they’ll know. Teens have this weird sense for feigned passion.

John from LeaderTreks here. Great article. There are people that influence only out of their “position of authority “as you’ve identified, but there are people who “just hang out with students”. The key, as you’ve shown in this article is “relationships of influence”. Great challenge, good reminder. Nice job!

Sounds like a horrific school! I have worked in many high schools and ipads and cell phones are not allowed, using them results in them being confiscated. Students are also not allowed to have ear phones on while on campus, no hats or hoods on, no sagging, etc.
As for feeling depressed once you were out of youth ministry, I can totally relate to that! Very tough! I also agree that we cannot expect respect, but should seek to earn it. Good stuff!
