We've heard the parables of Jesus, but have we really experienced them? For many, the stories Jesus used to teach truth, to get people thinking about faith and life, and to challenge them to live differently are just that—stories. But with these thought-provoking short films from 36 Parables, you can help your students truly experience the parables of Jesus.

Use these short films as an introduction to a message, an illustration, or a discussion starter. However you choose to use 36 Parables, your students will discover the truth inside each story and God's truth will be revealed to them in a new light.

On this DVD, you'll find powerful retellings of three parables, and you can download a free discussion guide online to take the learning even deeper. The parables on Amber include:

  • After Life, based on the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), tells the story of a middle-aged woman trying to explain to her pastor that she traveled to hell in a near-death experience. (5 minutes)
  • Tractor Safety Tips, based on the Parable of the Leafing Fig Tree (Matthew 24:30-33), tells the story of a man failing to understand the warning signs before him as he takes his new riding lawn mower out for a test drive. (3 minutes)
  • The Good Shepherd, based on the Parable of the Good Shepherd (John 10:11-18), tells the story of a young girl obsessed with animals who risks a big secret in order to help her older sister's neglected hamsters. (5 minutes)

Illuminate God's Word in a whole new way, and your students will begin to see their faith in a whole new way.

*The DVD also includes two documentaries, Behind the Scenes, and Why Parables?.
*The scripture for all three parables are on the DVD menus as well.

I really enjoy "Tractor Safety Tips," one of the humorous offerings in this series. It tackles a parable that is considerably difficult today, since I don't really believe that "all the terrible things happening today" are signs of the End Times! But whether one takes that view, or my view that terrible things are signs that we need to wake up and get busy loving our neighbor, the video can spark discussion. The Good Shepherd is another excellent discussion-starter, and brings the story home especially to young folks. I consider After Life to be the weakest in the whole series, not because it isn't a thoughtful approach to the question of what it takes to cause us to believe - even Jesus coming back from the dead doesn't do it! The problem for me is that the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus is so full of good material that the filmmakers had to choose which of many points to interpret, and in my opinion the main point is "Love your neighbor who is right outside your gate." I look forward to a reprise focussing on the "top" of the parable.

I use many of these in my middle school work. After life on this Amber DVD was one of the most powerful videos I have ever shown the kids. It started a discussion with them that was awesome. I have been working with youth for over 20 years. As with any video resource, you watch it, tailor the discussion questions to your group, and go from there. I built a whole year's worth of material using these and the actual parables out of the Bible. Very well done. I believe it can speak to both youth and adults.

I'm surprised that the 36 Parables curriculum is sold as a middle school curriculum. Some of the videos are age-appropriate; some are not, but the discussion questions and such are definitely geared toward adults. I tried 2 colors but found the same to be true of both.
