Gone are the days of the flannelgraph. Well, we hope so anyway! Students today are looking to connect with the teachings of Jesus, but often the stories they hear or read about Jesus sound like just that- stories. Using thought-provoking short films from 36 Parables, and the free downloadable discussion guides, you can help your students truly experience the parables of Jesus.

Use these short films as an introduction to a message, an illustration, or a discussion starter. However you choose to use 36 Parables, your students will discover the truth inside each story and God?s truth will be revealed to them in a new light.

This DVD offers three compelling videos that put Jesus' parables into a modern day scenario, giving students something to think about and opening up opportunities for dialogue. The parables on 36 Parables: Purple include:

  • "Out of Reach" portrays a young girl trying to persuade her father to let her play with his antique fire truck. Based on the Parable of the Friend at Midnight (Luke 11:5-8); approx. 4 min.
  • "The Car Lot" introduces a car salesman who is forced to think creatively in order to obtain a new job. Based on the Parable of the Shrewd Manager (Luke 16:1-13); approx 6 min.
  • "Sean" shows the story of a high school teacher who fights for a student who is facing expulsion. Based on the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Luke 13:6-9); approx 6 min.

Illuminate God's Word in a whole new way, and your students will begin to see their faith in a whole new way.

*The DVD also includes two documentaries, Behind the Scenes, and Why Parables?.

*The scripture for all three parables are on the DVD menus as well.

As an elementary school principal, I was most drawn to the Barren Fig Tree. The acting was good and the setting was so relevant to educators that I showed it to my faculty. It hit pretty deeply. Not only was it a good discussion starter for our faculty, it also made Christ's 11th-hour ministry to us more tangible.

Purple includes two of my favorites of the series. "The Car Lot" does a masterful job of translating a parable, The Dishonest Manager, that has puzzled folks ever since Jesus told it, but with enough ambiguity that the ambiguity of the parable also shines through. A good teacher is needed for this discussion! "Sean" may be my all-time favorite. Anyone who has worked with youth can identify with Mr. Gardner and the principal; and youth can identify with Sean. A great opportunity to tackle the concepts of what it takes to obey Jesus' order to bear fruit. "The friend at midnight" is less gripping than the others (especially to parents), but still gets the point across - keep knocking!

The three parables on this DVD were very well done. Sean spoke powerfullly to our kids. Many of them saw themselves or someone they know like Sean. I use many of these in my middle school work. I have been working with youth for over 20 years. As with any video resource, you watch it, tailor the discussion questions to your group, and go from there. I have paid $10 for one video before but you get 3 for $17 on this DVD with discussion questions already done. Perfect to use.
