The parables Jesus taught were so much more than stories. Let teenagers experience the teachings of Jesus the way they were meant to-- as stories they could relate to, understand, and learn from. Using thought-provoking short films from 36 Parables, and the PDF discussion guides for each film on this DVD, you can help teens truly experience the parables of Jesus. Use these short films as an introduction to a message, an illustration, or a discussion starter. However you choose to use 36 Parables, your students will discover the truth inside each story and God's truth will be revealed to them in a new light. This DVD offers three compelling videos that put Jesus' parables into a modern day scenario, giving teens something to think about and opening up opportunities for dialogue.

The parables on 36 Parables: Lime includes:

- Charlie: A young jazz saxophonist struggles to make a living as an artist. Based on the Parable of the Mustard Seed (Luke 13:18-9, Mark 4:30-2, Matt 13:31-2); approx 5 min.

- Wise/Foolish: A college girl who procrastinated all semester is forced to make a choice between cheating on her final paper or going on a date with her new boyfriend. Based on the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders (Matthew 7:24-29, Luke 6:46-49); approx 5 min.

- Together: Gary, a middle-aged alcoholic must choose to stay sober or live his old life when his attempt to keep his relationship with his daughter backfires. Based on the Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds (Matthew 13: 24-30); approx 5 min.

Looking at each of these stories through a new lens, the teenagers in your youth group can discover and discuss the meanings, significance, and lessons from the parables.

Endorsement:

"36 Parables is not only a great idea, it's an idea executed very, very well. I don't think I've ever seen quality like this in a "church video." And that term is hardly relevant to the way these filmmakers are communicating. The cinematography, acting and directing are in good hands here, and compete with anything in the mainstream. This is what the church needs now: a way to speak timeless truths in a modern language that audiences are hungry for. I'm thoroughly impressed!" Cory Edwards

*The DVD also includes two documentaries, Behind the Scenes, and Why Parables?.

*The scripture for all three parables are on the DVD menus as well."

"Together," on the Wheat and the Weeds, is a powerful portrayal of the very struggle with addiction and dysfunctional family dynamics that so many of our families struggle with. It's chock full of ambiguity, which, when we think about it, Jesus' parable is, too - it only seems to be straightforward. Wonderful. My class watched it 4 times and kept seeing more. "Wise/Foolish" is another excellent story - and deals with the issue of plagiarism, an issue that our children as young as middle school have to deal with. It also brings up issues of independence; God's call and our dreams vs. those of our parents; and when and how is it OK to help a friend? These two are well worth the price. The third, "Charlie," is an inspiring and well done video but in my opinion doesn't express the meaning of The Seed Growing Secretly. It can still start discussions by contrast with the parable - how much of the Kingdom of God is our effort, and how much is God's?

I use many of these in my middle school work. Wise/Foolish on this Lime DVD while tailored to a college audience, this clearly happens in middle school and high school settings too. I have been working with youth for over 20 years. I love to use video resources and 36 parables is on of the best I have found. As with any video resource, you watch it, tailor the discussion questions to your group, and go from there. I own all of these DVDs from 36 parables and I continue to find application for them in youth ministry and beyond. They are certainly worth the price.
